Dublin Pubs - A Walk Down Memory Lane - The Bleeding Horse, Camden Street
The Bleeding Horse was established in 1689 making it one of the oldest pubs in Dublin. Back in the early 1600’s it was close to a farrier’s work place. The name refers to a time when horses were afflicted by Head Staggers caused by endless miles of travels. Funny enough the symptons were ….
· Muscular weakness – giving out in the hind quarters
· Heavy on the forehand
· Looks like they’re drunk
· Standing base wide
· Hypersensitive to sounds
· The ‘Zonked look’ (Sleepy eyed, ears askew)
· Difficulty walking downhill and backing up
· Stumbling over nothing
Sounds very much like a hangover to me !I In order to relieve the pain the local farrier bled the horse behind the ear … now there’s a cure for you !!
The pub is full of character with bricks, wooden rafters and beams, little snugs and gas fires .The balconies, which were once church railings, overlook the flagstone bar below. Definitely one I will visit as soon as our pubs reopen !!
